Radio Telephony Restricted (Aeronautical) is a mandatory requirement for operating communication equipment in aircraft and a prerequisite for obtaining a CPL.

This assessment measures a pilot’s proficiency in communicating with Air Traffic Control while optimising radio channel usage and minimising transmission time.

The RTR (A) license, required for flying in India, is issued by the Ministry of Communications following an examination conducted by the Government’s Telecommunications Department (WPC division).

The RTR (A) evaluation consists of two parts:

Part 1 – Transmission

This practical session tests transmission skills according to aviation regulations and procedures. It is also referred to as Transmitting Techniques. Successful completion of Part 1 qualifies the candidate for Part 2.

Part 2 – Oral Examination (VIVA)

This involves an oral assessment of regulations, procedures, and radio principles. The exam is conducted by the Chief Examiner from WPC, along with a representative from DGCA or AAI.
